Writing Scoop: May 12 -National Limerick Day!

Today IS National Limerick Day: May 12!

A limerick is a type of poem that is usually funny.  It has 5 lines and is predominantly anapestic meter, having a disciplined rhyme of AABBA.  The 1st, 2nd & 5th line rhyme and the 3rd & 4th lines are shorter and have their own rhyme.

It is thought that the poem type, limerick, derived its name from County Limerick in Ireland, where perhaps the first limericks originated.

Here are 2 limericks for your enjoyment:

There was a young rustic named Mallory,
who drew but a very small salary.
When he went to the show,
his purse made him go
to a seat in the uppermost gallery.

The British wordplay and recreational mathematics expert Leigh Mercer (1893–1977) devised the following mathematical limerick:
12+144+20+347+(5×11)=92+0{\displaystyle {\frac {12+144+20+3{\sqrt {4}}}{7}}+(5\times 11)=9^{2}+0} This is read as follows:
A dozen, a gross, and a score
Plus three times the square root of four
Divided by seven
Plus five times eleven
Is nine square…

Writing Scoop: Happy Mothers Day!

My Mother's Garden Anonymous My Mother kept a garden,
a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things
that gave my life it's start.

She turned me to the sunshine
and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing
the seeds of self-esteem...

And when the winds and rain came,
she protected me enough-
But not too much because she knew
I'd need to stand up strong and tough.

Her constant good example
always taught me right from wrong-
Markers for my pathway
that will last a lifetime long.

I am my Mother's garden.
I am her legacy-
And I hope today she feels the love
reflected back from me.

Writing Scoop: Painting & Poetry

The Children's Hour By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Between the dark and the daylight,
When the night is beginning to lower,
Comes a pause in the day's occupations,
That is known as the Children's Hour.

I hear in the chamber above me
  The patter of little feet,
The sound of a door that is opened,
  And voices soft and sweet.

From my study I see in the lamplight,
  Descending the broad hall stair,
Grave Alice, and laughing Allegra,
  And Edith with golden hair.

A whisper, and then a silence:
Yet I know by their merry eyes
They are plotting and planning together
  To take me by surprise.

A sudden rush from the stairway,
A sudden raid from the hall!
By three doors left unguarded
  They enter my castle wall!

They climb up into my turret
  O'er the arms and back of my chair;
If I try to escape, they surround me;
  They seem to be everywhere.

They almost devour me with kisses,
  Their arms about me entwine,
Till I think of the Bishop of Bingen
  In his Mouse-Towe…

Can YOU do IT?  Reach your GOALS?  Here is how Michael Jordan not only became a role model, exemplar & super star but completely changed the game!

"When we looked at him for the draft, he was 195 pounds and 6-6, so he was kind of thin," said Rod Thorn, the Bulls' GM when Chicago drafted Jordan. "So the biggest thing about him was, can he make a shot?"
