Artificial Intelligence: AI

Artificial Intelligence: AI

Artificial Intelligence is a wonderful tool when used appropriately.  AI can save literally hundreds of hours for research in various fields: STEM, medicine, finance, economics and so on.  However, AI must be programmed.  And by whom?  The programming of AI may be skewed to benefit certain groups.  Why?  Because it can be.

Most recently a platform has been created to write numerous essays, reports, presentations and so on.  On one hand, this program ChatGPT holds much benefit for those professionals who must get reports out quickly.  On the other hand, ChatGPT is also being used as a student resource for easy-essay generation.  Plug in the assigned prompt and in seconds out comes the assignment!

Here are some considerations for using AI as a substitute for student learning:

Why should kids go to school at all if students will address assignments by pre-programmed material?

Why should teachers assign essays and other indicators of student progress if a computer answers the prompt?

Why learn to read: the computer will read for you!

Why learn to write: the computer will write for you!

Why bother expressing your ideas, when they are really the thoughts of a computer?

How will you interact later in your profession if you have no reading/writing skills?

How will you be able to cope with materials that the computer cannot respond to (there are some)?

How will you interact with other professionals who have done the work of educating themselves?

How does lack of knowledge affect your standing in the community (robots, regurgitating programmed materials are easy to spot!)?

How does it feel to learn relatively nothing except steps to create a computer-generated paper/essay?

Ultimately: How will you feel about yourself?
