Writing Scoop: Satire & Activism

November 30, 1667 Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland.  Swift was a political essayist, distributing pamphlets for his parties: first Wigs then Tories.  He also used his writing as a catalyst for political, economic and social change in his satires: Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal. As a poet, author and cleric Swift sought out injustices and agitated for his people. A cleric, who was the Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Swift became known as "Dean Swift."  Jonathan Swift is regarded as the foremost satirist in the English language and the term "Swiftian" became acknowledged as a word meaning use of satire as activism for reform.
