Art as Social Activism

Art is often thought of as "pretty" or "complementary" to the space it inhabits.  However, art is a powerful visual tool that can bring awareness to the viewer.  Several artists throughout history have used their art as a means of expressing their political, economic, social and intellectual concerns.  One of these brilliant artists was Diego Rivera.

Born in Guanajuato, México, Rivera created murals and paintings in Mexico, Europe and the United States.  In his many works, Rivera expressed his strong feelings about social injustice, politics, science, and the cultural changes that were occurring in the mid 20th Century,  Rivera used a dazzling palette, surrealism, mythology, realism and many other concepts/techniques in his murals to accent the evolution of humanity and his own ideas regarding civilization in the huge murals he created.

Diego Rivera was a true original and great artist.  The genius of Diego Rivera lives on in his many murals and paintings.
