Writing Scoop: The DBQ Essay
The DBQ, Document Based Question, often seems daunting. You are given historic background, a prompt and approximately 8 relevant documents that address the occurrence in history. Each document typically has 1 or 2 short answer questions to answer.
Attack the DBQ assignment this way:
1. Carefully read the prompt.
2. Read the historic background information (In addressing the DBQ assignment in a reversed order than it appears, you will be able to focus on how to use history to write your essay.).
3. Decide on your point of view: for or against is usual.
4. Read each document separately, answering the short questions that appear below it (If there are no short questions, note what position the document takes: for or against.).
5. Use your short answers of about 3/4 of the documents as a guide to writing your essay. Make sure you support your position and also have a rebuttal and counter rebuttal document included.
GOOD LUCK!
