Writing Scoop: The Chocolate Cake Teaching Method

We do not always have a clear and precise vision of what to teach our children. It is the spontaneous additions to the lesson that may not only increase interest among students but give them a deeper understanding. Reading from a lesson plan inhibits learning; however, augmenting topics with anecdotes, random facts and even a dash of humor, will benefit the subject from the perspectives of both teachers and students.

Example: A chemistry teacher was going over certain chemical reactions in his class.  He decided, since creating a reaction/explosion in the school's lab might be dangerous (!!!), to relate chemical combustion to an every day topic: home baking.  Highly knowledgeable and prepared to step out-of-the-box with his lesson, the educator related chemical reactions to baking, an activity that often relies on ingredients interacting to create delicious cakes, pies and the like. He assigned his class to either produce a recipe or baked item that used a reaction among the ingredients to cause an effect.  The lesson was so well received that the teacher used it throughout his time in the classroom, with often delectable results.
