Writing Scoop: National Weather Service 1870
The National Weather Service formed by the joint resolution of Congress and penned by President Ulysses S. Grant has come a long way since its inception. The original NWS was part of the Department of War to protect by informing the population of the United States of weather conditions. The 1870 mission statement read, in part that the NWS would "provide for taking meteorological observations at
the military stations in the interior of the continent and at other
points in the States and Territories...and for giving notice on the
northern Great Lakes and on the seacoast by magnetic telegraph and marine signals, of the approach and force of storms."
Over the years, the National Weather Service has provided continuing advice and information about weather conditions and their effect on the United States. As instruments became more advanced, the NWS was able to fine tune its forecasts and reports. The NWS is a valuable asset to the United States, offering a wide range of benefits regarding weather, the environment and aviation conditions that have an enormous impact on daily life.
